What slab foundations looks like on site
Settlement and heave are opposites and they look alike from inside. Settlement is the slab dropping; heave is soil pushing it up, frequently because of a plumbing leak feeding the clay under one part of the house. Piering a heaving slab makes it worse.
Post-tension slabs are common in newer construction and the cables are under enormous tension. Locating them before any coring or cutting is not optional, and a contractor who does not mention it is a contractor to ask more of.

What does slab foundations involve? Common questions
Why is my slab foundation cracking?
The clay under it. Middle Tennessee clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and a slab sitting on it moves with the seasons — heaving in a wet winter, settling in a dry summer, and cracking where the movement is uneven. A slab crack that is stable is common; one that is widening, or where one side has dropped, is the one to look at.
What is a post-tension slab and does it matter for repair?
A slab with steel cables tensioned inside it, common in newer subdivisions. It is stronger than a plain slab, and cutting into it without locating the cables is dangerous — a tensioned cable let go is a serious hazard. Repair on a post-tension slab is done by people who know where the cables are, and the plans or a scan tell them.
